Pike Place Market

Visitors staying at Silver Cloud Hotel – Broadway have the opportunity to visit one of the oldest public markets in the United States – Pike Place Market.

Opened in 1907, Pike Place Market overlooks Elliot Bay and is considered a place of business for many of the town’s small farmers, merchants, and craftspeople. With nine acres of land built on a steep hill, Pike Place Market offers many types of businesses and services, some including: Antiques & Galleries, Clothing & Accessories, Food, Gifts & Merchandise, Handmade Crafts, Restaurants, and Services.

The history behind the Pike Place Market is what makes it such an interesting place. On opening day – August 17, 1907, More than 10,000 eager shoppers came to the corner of First Avenue and Pike Street for a day of shopping. At the time, there were only eight farmers with wagons, and they were all overwhelmed with demand. By 11:00 am, farmers had sold out of their goods, and the Pike Place Market was officially born. It wasn’t until the end of the year when Pike Place Market constructed its first building – every space being occupied.

Today, home to more than 200 commercial businesses, 190 craftspeople, and 100 farmers; Pike Place Market is recognized internationally as America’s premier farmers’ market. In addition to all of the goods and services available to everyone, there are over 250 street performers and musicians throughout the market – a great place for the family to relax and enjoy the shows.
